The story — text transcript

Panel 1 — The pressure

Kojo sits alone in his small design studio. His phone reads: “RENT DUE FRIDAY.” A quotation lies on his desk. He thinks: “If this client accepts, we can finally breathe.”

Panel 2 — The offer

The client leans forward: “The work is GH₵2,000. Put GH₵3,000 on the invoice. We’ll split the extra.” Kojo’s hopeful expression fades. The client adds: “It’s how things work. Nobody will know.”

Panel 3 — The struggle

At their kitchen table, Kojo tells Ama: “If I refuse, I could lose the job. But if I agree, I’ll be helping him steal.” Ama replies: “The pressure is real. So is the choice.”

Panel 4 — The light

Ama opens their Bible. They read: “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely:” — Proverbs 10:9 (KJV excerpt). Kojo says: “I’ve been asking God to guide me. Now His Word is showing me a step I’m afraid to take.” Ama replies: “Then let’s ask Him for courage—and face the next step together.”

Panel 5 — The cost

Kojo presents an accurate invoice: “I can invoice only for the work I do.” The client pushes it back: “Then I’ll find someone else.” The door closes. Kojo remains seated in the silence.

Panel 6 — The honest prayer

At home, Kojo asks: “I did the right thing. Why does it still hurt?” Ama takes his hand: “We still needed that money.” They bow their heads. Kojo prays: “Father, I’m disappointed and afraid. Help us trust You and act wisely.”

Panel 7 — The next faithful step

They review their spending and contact their landlord early. Kojo follows up with previous customers, sends samples of his work, and asks a trusted friend about legitimate opportunities. Prayer gave their worries a voice. Faithfulness gave their next steps a direction.

Panel 8 — The resolution

Several days later, Kojo completes a modest design job and checks his invoice. Ama asks: “Does this cover everything?” Kojo replies: “Not yet. But this invoice tells the truth.”

He could not control when the next opportunity would come. He could choose how he would meet it.

Scripture for reflection

Proverbs 10:9 (KJV, excerpt): “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely:”

What the passage invites us to consider

This wisdom saying commends an upright way of life and contrasts it with crooked conduct. In Kojo’s situation, our application is to refuse a dishonest invoice while taking responsible action about the financial pressure. The story does not promise that an honest choice brings immediate income or removes every difficulty.

Kojo still needs work, support, and a plan. Asking for help and taking practical steps belong alongside his decision to act honestly.

We do not earn salvation through honest behaviour. We receive salvation through Jesus Christ, and His grace teaches us to live differently. Read Ephesians 2:8–10 and Titus 2:11–12.

Talk about it

1. Where do you recognise the pressure Kojo feels?

2. How does the biblical principle speak to the proposed invoice?

3. What truthful response and practical support could help someone in a similar situation?

A step to practise

Review one business or work habit this week: invoices, product descriptions, expense claims, or promises to customers. Correct anything misleading and seek wise support for the pressures behind it.

Prayer

Father, You know our needs and the choices before us. Forgive the compromises we have made. Through Jesus Christ, teach us to walk in truth. Give us courage when obedience costs us, wisdom for our practical needs, and humility to seek help. Let our work reflect Your character. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
